Peter the Fuller

Peter the Fuller
(d. 488)
   Patriarch and Theologian.
Peter is said to have been a monk in Constantinople. He was expelled from his monastery for his Monophysite opinions, but was appointed Patriarch of Antioch by zeno the Isaurian in 470. However, the following year he was expelled and imprisoned in his monastery. Nothing daunted, he was restored in 475, deposed again in 477 and was restored for the last time in 482 as a result of his consenting to Zeno’s ‘Henoticon’. He is primarily remembered for his addition of the words ‘who was crucified for us’ to the formula ‘Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal’. He is also said to have introduced the recitation of the Nicene Creed at the Eucharist and the commemoration of the Virgin mary’s title Theotokos (Bearer of God) at every service.
